Friday Photo – Horrible Bus Stops Edition

Hi Streets.mn,

Here I am, the other half of Streets.mn’s Flickr page moderation duo, ostentatiously starting the fist of my bi-weekly photo posts with a whole bunch of my own photos! I hope you’ll forgive me – I just thought it might be a nice introduction to me and my sour take on this realm. You see, while Allie provides you with uplifting content like a lush panorama of the Powderhorn 24, I can’t help but play the proverbial devil on your shoulder, reminding you how bad everything actually is.  (Probably has something to do with this) So without further ado, here is my first Friday Photo post: 10 strong contenders for worst bus stop in “MSP”, complete with sarcastic remarks!

Because let's face it, cars.

This bus stop was thoughtfully placed right next to a gas station, so you don't have to get in your car just to pick up a gallon of gas on the weekend.

If you look at this picture carefully, it appears that two identical twins have just been mauled by an SUV on Lake st. (a plausible scenario) But if you look even more carefully, you realize it's a bus stop.

You could call Edina Realty today at 763-424-8787 for your Free Market Evaluation, or I could just give you mine: The invisible hand of the Free Market has given the carless residents of this 'burb the bird.

I tried calling Edina Realty for their evaluation of the Free Market, but there seemed to be some kind of misunderstanding.

How poignant - you could be laid eternally to rest mere feet from where you were laid out by traffic waiting for your bus. Note the helpful reminder that streetcars used to exist. Also note the additional sign indicating that, yes, believe it or not, buses stop here.

At least it's better than airline food. *Seinfeld bassline*

Nice try. Wait, nevermind.

Nice try, Minneapolis. Kidding.

Well that does it for this Friday, folks. I encourage you all to snap your own pics of bus stops that not even Instagram can purty up. And don’t forget to upload them to the Streets.mn Flickr account! Along with whatever else you deem worthy, of course. Don’t worry – not all my posts will consist of my own stuff, I promise. Stay tuned on future Fridays for some excellent work by other Flickr contributors, and a few special treats.

Yup, that them’s some ugly bus stops. Love your blog, BTW!

Excellent post. I have a personal hatred of the one next to Lakewood Cemetery, which is even worse in winter with the snow piles.

The northbound stop at University and Snelling is very bad. https://twitter.com/katielynroth/status/369543553766006784/photo/1/large

…however, it is probably outdone by the southbound one at Snelling and St. Anthony (north side of I-94): http://goo.gl/maps/yzNmK

7th and Nicollet in downtown Minneapolis is pretty bad considering it’s Metro Transit’s busiest stop. I made a post about it last year: http://www.streets.mn/2012/10/26/when-the-humble-bus-stop-is-a-little-too-humble/

There are some very busy stops in downtown St. Paul which are pretty bad too. I started an UrbanMSP thread a while back which included a distant shot of one at 6th & Cedar. Extremely busy, extremely narrow sidewalk: http://www.urbanmsp.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1488

Good news is that at least three of these bus stops are getting improvements. Bad news is it will take awhile. 36th is getting a cycletrack with a improved south side sidewalk (construction was supposed to start this fall, but is going to be delayed). The 2 (or 3? or 4?) 35w stops will be improved by the “Orange Line” (pray it will be better than the Red Line).

Hate to pop your pessimistic bubble but Minneapolis really has gotten much nicer from the time I moved here 15 years. I hated that Minneapolis was so car-centric (I didn’t own a car during my time here). Then I moved to Seattle for a few years, read that Minneapolis was voted the most bike-friendly city in the U.S. in 2010, moved back a year later and really noticed the improvements. We have a LONG, LONG way to go still, but I feel good we are on somewhat (with a few hiccups, again Red line) the right path
