Opportunities to show up

Woody Allen (or perhaps it was Harry Truman) famously said decisions are made by those who show up.  Streets.MN readers who are also Minneapolis residents may be interested in these opportunities to show up (and make decisions):

I actually would really like to apply for the pedestrian committee, but I noticed there's a section for references on the application form. I'm a bit curious what sort of references you think they might be looking for for these positions? I'm just a citizen with a huge interest in planning matters and a lot of ideas, so I don't have any connections with related organizations or businesses. Would I use regular professional references? Personal acquaintances who know my level of passion about this topic?

I'm not an expert. However, my recommendation is to add a reference from your professional life, your personal life and your community life. I would imagine they are looking for well-rounded citizens. That's my 2 cents. Best _Nate

If you know your councilmember, put them on there. If you don't know your councilmember, introduce yourself. You can break the ice by asking if they've filled their ward quota for the pedestrian advisory committee. If they have, then you don't need to apply because you won't get selected anyway. Which is a snarky way of saying that the committees use a ward quota system.
