More School Money Madness

If you follow me on Twitter or are my Facebook friend, you know that I think the new Mankato middle school is a bad idea. You can read a great post about it here from my friend and Mankato native Nate Hood. Luckily for you friends, I’m not here to talk to you about this school. Unfortunately for […]

Refining an Idea: 26th/28th Streets

Starting next year, Minneapolis plans to repave 26th and 28th Streets between I-35W and Hiawatha Ave, continuing west to Hennepin Ave in the future. Though nominally a repaving project, the city has also budgeted $400K for bicycle improvements on the two streets and is undertaking a planning study on how to potentially reconfigure the street, […]

Sunday Summary – August 3, 2014

Here’s the past week on streets.mn in one fell swoop: Ideas department:  Suggest a Story: Rather than summarize, here’s the post in its entirety: “If you have an interesting story, but you can’t write about it, or you think someone at streets.mn should consider it, add it to this list: Suggest a Story.  We make no commitments, but […]

Sunday Sketch – Sketching the TPT Parking Ramp & Visualizing Something Else

I always thought it would be smarter for homeowners to maintain the front yard of their neighbor’s home since they usually  have a better view of their neighbor’s yard than their own. We live in a loft in  the Union Depot which is mostly awesome except for the view. Outside our window there is a skyway leading […]

Duluth Quadcopter Experience

An interesting look at the city of Duluth as filmed by a camera on a quadcopter. I don’t like to use the term “drone” when discussing remotely piloted small aircraft. Drones are those huge, weird looking, military aircraft that shoot missiles and drop bombs.

Friday Photo: Avoiding Future Egrets

[The normally scheduled Friday photo person is off today.] Here’s a picture of an egret hanging out on a park bench on Raspberry Island during the recent flood in Saint Paul.   This is a horrible picture. Let’s not let this happen again.

Suburban Sidewalk Retrofits

The lack of suburban sidewalks has long been a legitimate urbanist complaint. While more new suburban developments are being built with sidewalks, it’s still a huge job to retrofit all the suburbs that grew up without them. For this discussion I’m not talking about trails. Trails get plenty of attention and have large, active constituencies […]

Why I Agree with Saint Paul on the B-Line

Recently, Ramsey County and Saint Paul joined forces to delay the opening of the B-Line, to coordinate transit studies, ranging from the Riverview study to a streetcar study and this arterial-“BRT” (a.k.a. faux Bus Rapid Transit) study. This was a good move for the city and transit users. Due to changes to the 54 since the line was initially planned, […]
