Mapping Prejudice: Make History That Matters

February 21 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Mapping Prejudice is creating the first-of-its-kind map of racial covenants for an American city. Racial covenants are legal codicils that were embedded into property deeds during the first half of the twentieth century. Their purpose was to bar people who were not white from buying or even occupying the parcels of land to which they were attached.

We are relying on community volunteers to help us document the history of these discriminatory deeds. At this meeting, we’ll read covenants together and extract the data we need to put them on a map.

Our goal is to answer some questions critical to our contemporary efforts to confront yawning racial disparities:
• How much land was covered by racial restrictions in Minneapolis?
• What neighborhoods were off limits to people who were not white?
• How have covenants influenced contemporary demographic patterns?
• What groups were seen as the biggest threat to neighborhood stability and property values?
• What do we do next?

Please bring a laptop or tablet with a keyboard. For more information about Mapping Prejudice and our map, please look at our website: https://www.mappingprejudice.org/get-involved/
