The Return of Roadkill Bill

As Bicyclopolis Book II takes shape on my drawing table, there will be a brief intermission during which Streets.mn will reprise a colorized Roadkill Bill comic strip every Sunday. This week, Angerman returns to protest the expansion of a road. Click on the comic to make it bigger:

Twin Cities Traffic Congestion Goes From Fine to Still Fine

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) released a report last Thursday noting a slight year-over-year increase in Twin Cities freeway congestion. It’s a report and has lots of numbers, but it’s a fairly easy thing to skim through if you are interested. Lots of good stuff in there, and also in this newspaper version of […]

“People Like Their Cars”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this phrase. “People like their cars!” It’s usually followed with a inane trite like “we’re not Europe or Manhattan.” Actually, now I remember seeing that exact thing in the comment section on a piece for Southerminn.com talking about bringing rail to Northfield: Sidebar: I really wish […]

Chart of the Day: More Vehicle Trends

Here are four more charts about the US car fleet over time. The first shows average vehicle weight, average horsepower, average fuel economy,  and CO2 emissions. Particularly the weight trajectory reminds me of Jevon’s paradox, where increases in efficiency can lead to more energy use. Also, trucks are much less efficient than cars.

Chart of the Day: Vehicle Sales vs. Gas Price over Time

Here’s a chart that compares car and truck sales over the last decade. Ostensibly, it shows how increasing gas prices have led to more and more people buying cars instead of trucks. [via Washington Post.] I don’t know. To me it says that nobody is changing much, or that the “shock” of gas prices is fairly […]

The War on Pedestrians

Updated November 6, 2014* Many veterans have come back from Iraq and Afghanistan with permanent, disabling wounds. Many suffer head traumas from concussions or fractured skulls when vehicles they’re traveling in are blown up by Improvised Explosive Devices. Pedestrians and Cyclists in Saint Paul are also seeing combat type head traumas—like Sowinta Kay, age 20, who was […]

Cars Feel Like the Future

For you, what’s the most obvious sign that time is passing and has passed? Like when you look around at the average scene in your everyday environment, and you’re able to determine that it’s not the same as five years ago, or a decade ago, or twenty years ago? With one notable exception, I’d have […]
