Come to Open Streets Franklin with Streets.mn!

Join us at Open Streets Franklin this year on Sunday, July 10! This year’s event spans East Franklin Avenue from Portland Avenue to 26th Avenue. Mingle in motion with us, starting at the west end and meandering east to reconvene on the west end in Seward. From there, we’ll venture off Franklin for a little stroll down Milwaukee Avenue, a biker- and ped-friendly mall and Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Franklin Sidewalk at Park

Does ADA Even Apply to Sidewalks?

I live just off Franklin, and have regularly bussed and biked along it for decades. One day many years ago, I was surprised to see someone rolling down the east-bound traffic lane in a wheelchair. It was on that particularly harrowing section of Franklin between Portland and Chicago. I immediately wondered what was so wrong […]

The Resurfacing and Restriping of Franklin Avenue SE – A Review

Sunday Summary – February 7, 2016

Indeed, it has been a spectacular winter week here in Minnesota: streets.mn writers were involved with the international Winter Cycling Congress (and other readers and writers attended, I’m sure) held in Minneapolis February 2-4, there was […]

Redesigning the Franklin/Cedar/Minnehaha Intersection

If you have ever traveled through the intersection of Franklin/Cedar/Minnehaha, you know how confusing, wide, fast, and unfriendly it feels. With the second-most bicycle crashes, this is the second-most dangerous intersection in Minneapolis. It’s also one of the most dangerous intersections in Hennepin County, with crash rates more than two and a half times the […]

In a Wheelchair? Good Luck on Franklin Avenue

One of the most highly-used, dangerous, and non-ADA compliant streets in Minneapolis needs to change right now. On my way to work yesterday morning, I witnessed a man in a motorized-wheelchair stuck on the sidewalk of Franklin Avenue (a bit west of Portland Avenue). He was not stuck because his battery died or because of […]
