Elections decide how we build our streets. Not the engineers, not the planners — the people we send to St. Paul decide what gets funded, what gets studied for another decade, and what actually gets built. A legislator who understands why a protected bike lane or a frequent bus route matters is worth more to a neighborhood than a hundred well-written public comments.
So how do we get more transportation allies into state office, and how do we do it without a massive war chest or high-profile candidate endorsements?
That’s what we’re gathering to talk about on Thursday, September 17. Streets.mn is hosting a Transportation and Land Use Advocates panel at Arbeiter Brewing in Minneapolis, bringing together organizers and policy experts from Neighbors for More Neighbors, Our Streets, Sustain Saint Paul, the Sierra Club North Star Chapter, and BikeMN. Streets.mn will moderate.
Plenty of the people making decisions about roads, transit, and land use came into office without a strong grasp of any of it. Most of our organizations can’t endorse candidates — but every one of us can educate them, lift up the allies already doing the work, and show up in numbers that make transportation impossible to ignore. The panel will get specific about what that looks like, and about what Minnesota could accomplish if we pulled it off.
