Max Hailperin's personal project is allofminneapolis.com. Minneapolis has 87 neighborhoods, including the three industrial areas. Some he knows well, others he has not yet entered. However, he has committed to explore all of them on foot: every block of every street in every neighborhood. He is working through the neighborhoods alphabetically, from Armatage to Windom Park, so as to focus in one area, then hop to somewhere else.

Walking All the Streets of Southwestern Fulton

The fourth and final fraction of my fall Fulton fieldwork consisted of the quadrant to the south of 50th Street West and to the west of Xerxes Avenue South, as shown in the following route map. As usual, the red lines show forward-and-back spurs off of the main loop and the light blue tint shows the full […]

Walking All the Streets of Southeastern Fulton

One look at the route map below makes clear that the southeast quadrant of the Fulton neighborhood is heavily influenced by Minnehaha Creek, unlike the northwest and northeast portions I walked previously. Not that this accounts for all I saw. For example, this quadrant also turns out to be the land of the former gas stations. As usual, the […]

Walking All the Streets of Northeastern Fulton

The Fulton neighborhood’s northeast corner is in Lake Harriet. Rather than wait for the lake to freeze, I started on the shoreline path at 47th Street West. The dark blue lines in the following route map show the main loop I took back to that spot, aside from one detour I took around a temporarily […]

Walking All the Streets Of Fulton from Farmers to France

I confess, “from Farmers to France” is more alliterative than strictly accurate. I started immediately adjacent to the Fulton Farmers Market, but I devoted a few minutes to the environs before going into the market itself. And I returned there at the end of the walk, after France Avenue. The Fulton neighborhood in southwest Minneapolis extends […]

Walking All the Streets in Northern Folwell

The day after I walked the southern half of Folwell neighborhood, I returned for the northern half. The following map shows my route, consisting of a main loop (shown in blue) starting and ending at Penn and 36th Avenues North, supplemented by some forward-and-back spurs (shown in red). Starting out eastbound on 36th Avenue North from […]

Walking All the Streets in Southern Folwell

The Folwell neighborhood is named for Folwell Park in North Minneapolis, not Folwell School in South Minneapolis. (This means it is indirectly named for Folwell the park board president, not Folwell the University of Minnesota president—though they were one and the same person.) So the title “Southern Folwell” indicates not which Folwell I’m writing about, but rather which half of it […]

Walking All the Streets in Southern Field

Having previously walked the northern part of the neighborhood, I set out the next day to walk everything from 48th Street to Minnehaha Creek. The start and end of my main loop were at 48th and Chicago. As usual, I also had to take some forward-and-back spurs, shown in red. Recall that Chicago Avenue in the vicinity […]

Walking All the Streets in Northern Field

South Minneapolis’s Field neighborhood extends eastward from Interstate 35W to Chicago Avenue and northward from Minnehaha Creek to 46th Street, as shown by the blue tinting in the following map. My first day’s stroll through horticulture and history started and ended on 46th Street, from Clinton Avenue (A) to 3rd Avenue (B). The five spurs […]

Walking All the Streets in Ericsson (Day 3)

Having walked the eastern, park-dominated part of the Ericsson neighborhood on day 1 and half of the west on day 2, I was ready to finish off the rest of the west. In the route map below, the light blue tint indicates the full neighborhood, the dark blue line indicates the circuitous main path between two stops on the […]

Walking All the Streets in Ericsson (Day 2)

As on my first day in the Ericsson neighborhood, the blue tinted area on the route map shows the full neighborhood, whereas the heavier blue and red lines show where I walked this day. (The blue line shows the main loop, starting and ending on 42nd Street East at Nokomis Avenue South. The red lines show […]
