Shopping Centers vs. Transit Users

The Star Tribune recently ran a story about a Coon Rapids strip mall owner who is trying to evict a public transit bus stop from its property, saying this violates its property rights. This private property versus transit controversy has surfaced several times before in this metro area and across the nation. It falls in a […]

Quarterly Transit Report – June 2016

An A Line Preview The big news is the June 11 opening of the A Line, the first urban BRT. I’ll do a separate report on it after it’s been running a couple of weeks and the initial bugs are worked out. The basics have already been well publicized—off-board fare collection, large heated shelters, limited […]

St. Paul’s Skyway Pigeon Rookery

Each year my wife and I attend the American Craft Council show at St. Paul RiverCentre, this year on April 8. The level of artistry and skill is breathtaking. I highly recommend it, but that’s not the reason for this post. Each year we park in the Kellogg Blvd. ramp and walk across the skyway, […]

Quarterly Transit Report – March 2016

The March service change The big service improvement is the doubling of the Route 11 weekday and Saturday frequency from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes. Route 11 runs on 2nd Street NE in northeast Minneapolis and 4th Avenue S in south Minneapolis. The increased frequency extends from 29th & Grand St. NE to 46th & […]

Suburb-to-Suburb Express Bus Experiment

Four of the “opt-out” suburban transit authorities are joining forces in a bold experiment to crack the very difficult suburb-to-suburb commuter market. Starting January 19, new Route 494 will link Maple Grove, Plymouth, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie and Shakopee with rush hour express buses. The new route is actually three sub-routes. Maple Grove Transit Center to […]

The Quarterly Transit Report – December 2015

The December 12 service change is a small one. The biggest news is the addition of first time Sunday/Holiday service on Route 32 Lowry Crosstown that connects Robbinsdale, north and northeast Minneapolis and Rosedale. Buses will run every half hour 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Making buses go away The only other change of note […]

Themed Street Names

It’s whimsy to be sure, but I enjoy finding groups of streets whose names have a common theme. That’s different than the alphabets of Minneapolis and its western suburbs, or the newer alphabets of Dakota and Washington Counties. The classic, bucolic small town theme is trees. The Twin Cities suburbs have absorbed a series of freestanding small […]

Historic Como Park Ped Bridge Restored

The St. Paul Parks Department recently finished the restoration of an historic pedestrian bridge that was used by streetcar passengers to cross the tracks in Como Park. Streetcars connected downtown St. Paul with Como Park in 1891, and turned around at a rambling wood depot. In 1898 the “Como Interurban” was extended to downtown Minneapolis via […]
