Do you like being a part of the Minnesota urbanist community? Do you want to foster excitement about transportation and land use? Do you want to learn how to manage a nonprofit organization and get some experience under your belt?
We have good news! This is your opportunity to join the Streets.mn board of directors!
As a board member, you will have the opportunity to help potential writers flesh out their ideas into full length articles. You’ll be able to organize fun events and meet like-minded people. You can work on our podcast and chat with policymakers, transportation professionals, and other content creators. You can be the person who brings more people into the movement and further a cause you care about.
How Streets.mn Works Under the Hood
Board members can participate in whatever aspect of the organization they feel interested in.
Our editorial committee is the core engine of the organization – it is the main interface for our volunteer writers, who submit their work to the editorial committee and receive edits and feedback in return. This starts a back-and-forth between writer and editorial, resulting in a published article.
Our events committee reaches out to venues and other organizations to plan fun and meaningful events.
The podcast committee works with volunteers to recruit guests, record interviews, and edit audio.
The social media committee reposts our articles all across social media to broaden our reach. The fundraising committee works on keeping our finances afloat in creative ways – we are 100% supported by our readers and listeners!
The technology committee works on maintaining and upgrading our website. Finally, the executive committee steers the organization, setting the agenda for our monthly board meetings, where every board member can weigh in on important decisions.
The executive committee is comprised of two Co-Chairs – currently myself and Eric Noonan – as well as a Treasurer, currently Jeb Rach, a Secretary, currently Brian Mitchell, and a Content Manager, currently NJ Hanson. The Content Manager serves as liaison between the board and our Managing Editor, Cirien Saadeh. Cirien is the linchpin of our organization; she edits the bulk of our articles and sets the strategy for our content output. Cirien has been essential in helping us stay true to our racial equity vision statement and stand up for diversity, equity, and inclusion, in the face of attacks by the federal government. With her help, we continue to publish important work addressing systemic racism, historical injustices, and this year specifically, the brutal federal occupation of the Twin Cities.
What would you like to see from Streets.mn? Do you think we should put more resources into our editorial process? Would you like to see us host more events? Do you have great ideas for fundraising and community outreach?
Join the board! You can be a leader and shape the future of the organization. If you are passionate about transportation and land use, this is your chance to channel that energy into something great.
Your Help Will Make a Difference
This year, local media outlets have been regularly putting out regressive, anti–transit, anti-bike articles and op-eds. We have given people a chance to shift the Overton window and make the case for bold, progressive policy choices. We’ve given people a microphone where they can tell us about their slice of the urban world. We’ve hosted stories of joy, beauty, and delight, such as Max Hailperin’s wonderful series exploring every single block in Minneapolis. We’ve shined a light on questionable decisions made by our government, and kept readers up-to-date with opportunities to demand better infrastructure.
Our work is meaningful! But we can’t do it without volunteer board members to keep the show running. I hope, dear reader, that today is the day you decide you’d like to join us for our next act!
